Hey everyone,
Saying that 2020 has been a turbulent year is an understatement. Between the pandemic, the looming winter, broken economies, September back-to-school (what school) vibes, this month really put us through a spin. We’ve gone through new beginnings (Sara’s new job), and old endings (the death of Sabrina’s cat), not to mention the mindfuck that was the full Harvest moon in Aries. Whew.
With all this, we’ve decided to take a little pause and rethink how we can keep giving you all the great stuff you’ve enjoyed, but to focus a little less on curating and more on creating. We want to make sure that everything you get in this newsletter is stuff you won’t find elsewhere. We’re also putting a little more focus on our podcast (which you can also follow on Spotify and Soundcloud), with some great guests lined up.
The coming issues will cover health, violence, elections and rituals, so we want to give all our attention to doing the best reporting possible.
In the meantime, we’ll leave you with a couple of things to get your teeth into. The next full length issue will be with you, well…when it’s with you. But a sneak peek - we’ll be talking about safety and what it really means to measure community wellbeing.
Sending you love and data,
Sara and Sabrina x
Eye Candy: (our new section where you can find our visualisations).
Here’s an infographic about a couple of things we found out from analysing this dataset about fatal police shootings in the US. Give it your own analysis and let us know what other things you found out. (Been a while since your last statistics class? Find our handy guide for how to read and communicate data here).
Projects we’re loving:
These seven stand-out pieces for World News Day.
Who are the most admired people in the world? YouGov found out.
Paulina Kosobucka’s new paper on how data journalism is related to synaesthesia. Very compelling stuff. Read it here (paywalled).
What we’re learning this month:
How to chill the fuck out. Seriously, go give yourself a break. You deserve it.
